The Square: Body, Word, and Both.

2018

The Square: Body, Word, and Both is a social experiment that reimagines audio description—a tool traditionally used to convey visual performance details to blind or visually impaired audiences—as a democratic, participatory act. Inverting its conventional logic, the work transforms description into a shared, unfiltered creative process.

For four hours, I move freely within a square boundary marked by masking tape. A microphone invites the audience to describe my movements in real time, offer instructions, or engage in a dialogue that blurs the line between creator and audience.

The piece examines time, space, and vulnerability:

  • Time: What comes first—the movement or the word? How long can a word sustain a gesture? Is language faster than motion?

  • Space: Where does “creation” end and “contemplation” begin? Are the divisions between them physical or imagine?

  • Process: The work exposes the raw, unfiltered nature of live art, challenging the expectation of polish in favor of authentic, uncurated vulnerability.

Here, the audience doesn’t just witness—they co-create both movement and audio description, questioning the boundaries of art, access, and participation.
